Episode 2 Transcript
S, M, L: (Humming, singing)
M: Now, here, tracking...
L: I guess just kind of wanting to get thoughts about flow of events or like the way I've grouped things, I've kind of, I grouped it out. Um. I grouped it out astrologically.
M: It's gonna be weekly?
L: So it feels biweekly, I guess.
M: Biweekly? Cause I mean, cranking out weeklies are...
S: It's tough,
M: ...tough.
S: If you're not dealing with timely events, like these things feel like they're not necessarily dealing with like. News.
L: Well. The other part, actually, is in front of a live audience.
S: Yeah, but but also like the listening audience, it doesn't seem like they have to hear it as soon as you've recorded it.
L: Oh, well, I would assume... I assume we would live... stream... it. There is, there is, for me, kind of a certain freedom in, like, the live streamness of just, like, it's done, fucking done. Don't care, mic drop out.
L, OS: A little bit of an insert here. The live stream part of this is an aspirational goal. We'll start off just on a Zoom call with the round table. So it will basically still be a live conversation, uncut. unless someone specifically reaches out and wants me to delete something from the Zoom recording, which you can certainly do. I'm looking to edit these talks as a little as possible, basically, because I've been teasing the best cut I can out of this footage for at least 2 months now. And that's probably absurd. Um, I have a bit too many perfectionist tendencies to think that that crap is going to be sustainable. So. Let's gooo!
L: So, like, getting into the questions, um, like, kind of a forgiveness exercise through,Do Not Expect Too Much From The End Of The World. Um, and uh, that, like, I feel like there's material from each of these that I want people to kind of, like, internalize, um, as, like, before they come to the table, right? And whether or not they share it, that's their own choice, like, that's not, like, the questions don't necessarily be asking at the table. But, like, all of the, like some sort of, like, material for them to work with on their own.
S: One thing that's not clear is that element here. Um, that you would have homework or that there's an assignment or uh, uh, screening related. It seems like it's in that context, but is it for all the other episodes also? Like, is there...
L: That's the hope actually. So I wanted it. So, and stuff like, I'd like to do, so, screening or podcast or something to listen to, like a lecture, even, just like a small, but, um, so, like, there's, there's, uh, the, uh, what is it, um, ethical capital or, um, How To Raise Values-Driven Capital from, um, uh, Jason Weiner Firm out in Colorado. That's just like a lecture. I want to see if we can we can actually like all watch that and like talk about it and that's okay with them. I don't actually know where it's posted in what capacity. It was like sent out as like a recorded after the livestream kind of thing.
M: And then who are you, or when you're, when you're talking about taking the 3 genre films? So who... Are these just gonna come from, like, as the season goes, you'll have, you'll pick out, you'll find which projects to do.
L: Um, there's, so some of them, I, like, um...
L, OS: my answer to this was totally incorrect, actually, and I'm not even gonna include it. I just misheard Matt and responded with something totally off. Uh, which is another inconvenient trick. My subconscious was playing on me. Um, he's asking about what movies we're gonna cover in the next seasons, after season one, here where we're learning about what co-ops are and what we want to use the format for. These later seasons, I'm aiming for us to follow worker co-op crews making 3 separate films, seasons 2, 3, and 4 consecutively, different genres, with 3 potentially very, very different funding and distribution networks. Why cover the making of this stuff? Well, just to ground it because this is kind of like the whole point. Um, so people can pick it up and run with it. Make it their own. Brief origin story here of this podcast idea. This whole project exists because uh, writing Saavie, uh, basically, which is a short that I picked up back in uh, COVID and expanded into a feature. Um, I wanted to do that production only as a worker's cooperative. And as I got deeper into the weeds with taking this beyond the writing stages, it became apparent that we might all benefit from sitting down to educate ourselves on what the nitty gritty details looked like. So back to what movies would we even be covering for seasons two, three, and four. First up is Saavie, and that, uh, the feature that I wrote, it's a sci-fi, which I've a whole lot to say about. Matt here definitely does know that I wrote Saavie, and he may be giving me a prompt to talk about it. Um, but I just bypass right by it. Um, but he just as easily, maybe gauging for himself, whether he'd like to throw his own hat in the ring as a nuanced, emotional, extremely relatable horror screenwriter and director himself.
L: Um, and just like the top of the episode. So, like, 1st hour or so being, like, each person at the table shares, they're, actually, with whomever the facilitator is. So, like, I'm talking about CPA stuff, we're gonna have like a CPA facilitator or something like that. The people, the people rotate. So someone that could be in the audience the last time could, in the audience, the next, or be in the, um, table discussion the next time.
L: Labor, like the labor movement stuff and like how debilitated unions have been is like something that's really important. And it's like fundamental to why doing work or cooperative, even though we have Iyazi, too. So that's like this, this part of this conversation, I foresee there being like, um, complicated parts of this conversation.
L: And like, needing like reps from the LA unions, basically, rules, contracts that are weird, like, are turnarounds, rates, equity. like if people have this huge like rental package.
L: My namesake was like someone that like got people into a room and got them arguing. But I want I want to take that further and get them like agreeing.
L: Yeah. Screening and recording. Um... So, how... Good question.
L: Are you serious? Because I was, like, the thing it was, I wanted to do, like, we would get, like, a TV monitor. Then do like a wire armature, weird like robo version, oh that's not... likely, but... Yes, yes, yes, yes, that's what I'm talking about. Oh, that's so cool. Man, that's really exciting. thought that was all fantasy. Oh.
L: Um, just to get even further into the weeds, of like, "well, why not?" The idea of, um, like, having a different lighting look for each of these episodes along the lines of Stop Making Sense. I don't know if he would want to be gaffing some of that. If that interests him at all! That sounds really fun.
L: It was totally helpful because we did all this and I, yeah, it's the start of the process.
S: The revolution? It won't be televised.
M: Just don't start it without me.
L: No, no. I won't.
